Survival Tips for Students


Middle school is a great opportunity to meet new people and begin to explore who you are and what you want to do with the rest of your life.  It can also be a difficult time, as there are a lot of things that are changing in your life.  You are meeting new people, there are more choices and decisions to make, teachers will expect more of you, and you will have more responsibility.


Here are some helpful survival tips for the middle school years:


1.  Stay organized


2.  Complete your assignments


3.  Do not be afraid to talk to your teachers


4.  Get involved in extra-curricular activities


5.  Try your hardest and do your best


6.  Stay healthy


7.  Talk to your parents


8.  Find an adult you trust to talk to when you are struggling


9.  Choose your friends wisely

Survival Tips for Parents

For students going into middle school, there are many new anxieties, apprehensions, and fears. Middle school students are faced with increased expectations and school work. Parents/guardians be aware that it is normal that your child may express concern.

Here are a few helpful hints from the Penn Yan Guidance Department:

1. Try not to be too anxious about your child going to the middle school

2. Help your child stay organized

3. Utilize the PYMS resources

4. Practice using a combination lock at home

5. Talk to your child about social skills

6. Keep the lines of communication open with your child

7. Stay involved as parents

8. Encourage your child to get involved in school activities and functions

9. Help your child to be their own advocate

10. Take advantage of opportunities to tour PYMS
